Pagosa Springs Community Band looking for new members

Posted

Did you “used” to play an instrument back in high school or college? Maybe you feel the call of making music with others — feeling those resonant harmonies again.

The Pagosa Springs Community Band is preparing for the Band-O-Rama concert each Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Pagosa Springs High School band room. There is still plenty of time for you to learn the music and play which ever pieces you feel comfortable playing.

If you do not have an instrument, Leo Baughman, our fearless leader (and high school music teacher) or Malinda Burnett (middle school music teacher) may have one you can borrow. We have members ranging in age from we don’t want to ask to middle school players. All of us just love to play music with others. You will be heartily welcomed.

The Band-O-Rama concert is Oct. 24 in the high school auditorium at 7 p.m., with a 6 p.m. dress rehearsal.

Some band members will lead master classes for students in middle school and high school bands to learn more about their instruments, how to get the best sound and how to care for them.

The Pagosa Springs Instrumental Music Society (PSIMS) will provide a taco dinner to the students and master class leaders before the dress rehearsal.

Each of the school bands and the community band will perform on their own, followed by a piece we all play together. This is an excellent opportunity for students to play with more experienced musicians and to hear the more complex music that they will be able to play as they develop their talent.

The PSIMS supports the Pagosa Springs Community Band, provides extra funds for local school music programs, scholarships for graduating students going on to study music at a high level, and helps with larger purchases of instruments and repair of instruments for the schools. It is very expensive to keep an orchestra of instruments in good condition.

We are blessed with a community that supports music in schools such that the high school and middle school can provide instruments for band students that haven’t got their own or who want to try a different instrument.

The PSIMS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization supported only by donations and sponsorships. All our concerts are free. We hope you will make a point of attending one in the future — Oct. 24 is your next opportunity.
