The night sky photo contest is underway.
We have received some submissions, but we realize there were many cloudy nights in July. We are hoping for clear skies during the moonless nights of August when the beautiful Milky Way is visible.
Submissions will be accepted through August. Winners will be announced in The Pagosa Springs SUN newspaper and cash prizes awarded on Sept. 10.
The Pagosa Sidewalk Astronomers are sponsoring the contest to promote astrotourism and to raise awareness about the need to protect the night sky against light pollution.
We are requesting photos of the stars or the Milky Way with something that represents Pagosa Springs in the foreground. Photos of people participating in night sky events hosted by Pagosa Sidewalk Astronomers will also be considered.
Three winners will be chosen in September, with first prize being $50, second prize being $30 and third prize being $20. See rules and more details at PagosaSidewalkAstronomers.org/photo-contest.
DarkSky International’s Advocates Network is a global community united in its efforts to protect the night from light pollution. The Pagosa Sidewalk Astronomers are local advocates working to preserve the night sky as an important natural resource. More advocates are needed; please contact us to join the effort.
We also organize free, educational public events using telescopes and binoculars. Together, we can preserve our dark sky for ourselves and future generations.
