Pagosa Country celebrates International Dark Sky Week

Posted

Each year during the new moon phase, DarkSky International designates a week in April as a global celebration of the night. In order to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the night sky, International Dark Sky Week encourages communities to organize events that share the wonder of the night.

This year, Pagosa is celebrating International Dark Sky Week 2026 April 13-20 in many ways.

The Archuleta County commissioners and Pagosa Springs Town Council both granted proclamations in recognition of this special week. We appreciate the ongoing work of both the county and town governments in support of dark skies.

All across town, we’ve gained lots of support. Several special drinks have been created in honor of the night sky and there’s been dark sky trivia. We appreciate local businesses for helping us celebrate and look forward to more fun next year.

Amateur astronomers across the globe celebrate International Dark Sky Week. The Pagosa Sidewalk Astronomers is hosting two nights of neighborhood star parties, April 15 and 16, from 8:30 to 9:45 p.m. in the Pagosa Lakes Property Owners Association Recreation Center overflow lot.

Bundle up and walk over if you are able. Parking is limited. Be mindful of your headlights shining on participants if you drive. We will have telescopes so you can view the cosmos.

Other ways you can celebrate International Dark Sky Week are by turning off your outdoor lighting, going outside with friends and family to enjoy the night sky, planning your own neighborhood star parties, learning more about dark sky-friendly lighting, and assessing your home’s outdoor lighting. Embrace the darkness. See activities for kids at idsw.darksky.org.

We urge everyone to use this celebratory week to talk to friends and neighbors about how each one of us can make a difference by improving outdoor lighting to protect the night sky.

DarkSky International, headquartered in Tucson, Ariz., is the globally recognized authority on light pollution.
