Pagosa Community Initiative’s family resource center seeks to empower Archuleta County families

Posted

The family resource center (FRC) at Pagosa Community Initiative (PCI) operates as a vital community hub in Archuleta County, providing family-centered services to promote stability, child well-being and long-term self-sufficiency through resource navigation, emergency aid, referrals, parenting support and goal-based family development.

Part of a statewide network supported by the Family Resource Center Association (FRCA) in Denver, PCI’s FRC delivers strength-based, prevention-focused programs that adapt to local needs while building proven protective factors against child abuse and neglect.

The FRCA offers training, guidance and evaluation to its 30 member centers across Colorado, ensuring effective partnerships that connect families to essential supports.

Core services at PCI’s FRC

Located at 550B Hot Springs Blvd., PCI’s Family Services Department helps residents facing challenges by offering:

• Resource navigation and referrals: One-stop access to community partners for housing, food, child care, health care, mental health and more.

• Emergency and concrete assistance: Urgent aid like food pantries, diapers and programs such as Adopt-A-Shelf for sustained family support.

• Parenting and education programs: Free support groups, workshops on family strengthening, positive parenting behaviors, problem-solving and resiliency.

• Family development: One-on-one, family-driven goal setting where participants prioritize needs like transportation and crisis resources, leading to stronger social connections and nurturing relationships.

These services emphasize family expertise in their own lives, with FRC staff acting as local community navigators to foster safe, healthy environments.

Proven impact on rural communities

The FRCA evaluations show FRC participants gain improved parenting skills, increased emotional support, better crisis access and enhanced child relationships — critical in rural areas like Archuleta County.

PCI complements this with out-of-school programs, adult education and family advocacy, established as a nonprofit in 2022.

As an FRCA member, PCI invites all Archuleta families to build resilience together.
