Pagosa Community Initiative launches Adopt A Shelf program to aid local families

In a move to strengthen neighborhood resilience and bolster support for families in need, the Pagosa Community Initiative (PCI) has announced a new program called Adopt A Shelf.

The initiative invites local businesses and community members to sponsor and maintain a shelf at PCI’s Family Resource Center, ensuring essential items are always stocked for households facing emergencies.

The program is straightforward: Adopters designate a shelf at PCI’s Family Resource Center, located at 550 B Hot Springs Blvd., and commit to keeping it stocked with emergency essentials. Items can include rice and beans, noodles, canned goods, condiments, toiletries or whatever you imagine a family might require in times of need.

“Neighbors helping neighbors—that’s the spirit behind Adopt A Shelf,” said PCI Executive Director Rebecca Tenpenny. “By partnering with local businesses and generous individuals, we can maintain a robust supply chain of essentials for families during times of crisis, health emergencies or unexpected financial strain.”

The new program aligns with PCI’s mission to support family stability and prevent crises from spiraling. Donors will receive acknowledgment for their contribution and will have the satisfaction of knowing they play a direct role in keeping pantry shelves stocked during tough times.

Interested members of the community can learn more or adopt a shelf by contacting PCI via email at familysupport@pagosacommunityinitiative.org or by phone at (970) 585-6521. Additional information is available on PCI’s website at www.pagosacommunityinitiative.org.

The Family Resource Center remains a hub for practical assistance, and PCI hopes Adopt A Shelf will broaden community involvement while ensuring that critical items remain accessible to those who need them most. The program’s launch is timely as families navigate economic pressures, weather-related challenges and other unforeseen events that can disrupt access to everyday necessities.

As PCI’s board chair, I invite every corner of our town — businesses, families, schools and civic groups — to consider adopting a shelf and supporting our neighbors in need. Together, we can keep shelves full and hands ready to help, one shelf at a time.
