Creation Care Pagosa and the Community United Methodist Church (CUMC) are honored to welcome back renowned climate scientist Dr. Terry L. Root to speak at this year’s Earth Day event, centered on the theme “Our Power, Our Planet.”
Join us on Thursday, April 24, at 6 p.m. at the CUMC, 434 Lewis St. Admission is free, and donations are gratefully accepted to support local environmental education initiatives.
This year’s Earth Day theme emphasizes the vital role each of us plays in creating a sustainable, resilient future. Root will speak on how ordinary citizens hold extraordinary power to shape the health of our planet through informed choices, community engagement and a shared commitment to change.
“We are thrilled to bring Dr. Root back to Pagosa,” said the Rev. Ken Daniell. “Her message is both urgent and hopeful, and exactly what we need in this moment. The theme Our Power, Our Planet reminds us that we’re not helpless. We are the solution.”
Root is professor emerita at Stanford University and a globally recognized voice in climate science.
She was a lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports that were co-awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize alongside Vice President Al Gore.
Among her many honors, she received the Spirit of Defenders Award for Science and the Lifetime Achievement Award from Point Blue Conservation Science. She currently serves on the boards of Defenders of Wildlife, Birds Caribbean and the Renewable Energy Wildlife Institute, among others.
Known for her accessible and engaging speaking style, Root will offer both a scientific and spiritual perspective on how we can face the climate crisis with courage, clarity and compassion.
Creation Care Pagosa is a faith-based environmental stewardship group open to everyone in the community. We meet on the fourth Thursday of each month at the CUMC. If you’d like to learn more or join our mailing list, please contact communications@cumcps.org.
