Aspen House proudly celebrated a major milestone with a highly successful groundbreaking event attended by more than 150 enthusiastic community supporters.
The gathering marked the official start of construction on a long-awaited project more than a decade in the making.
With shovels in hand, several of the adults with developmental disabilities in our community who have waited years for this moment to arrive took the first scoops of ceremonial dirt — symbolizing not only the beginning of construction, but the realization of a permanent, fully supportive home where they can live full, meaningful lives while remaining close to family, friends, and the community they know and love.
This milestone would not have been possible without the extraordinary support of the community, generous donors and a remarkable commitment from local building partners.
Leading the effort is Tim Brown, Aspen House’s general contractor, who came out of retirement to donate his time and expertise to the project.
In addition, he has rallied his subcontractors to contribute both time and materials — an incredible act of generosity that has saved Aspen House more than $1,240,000.
Adding to the significance of the day, Mitch Martin, of one of Aspen House’s dedicated building partners, operated the excavator and performed the official first dig, marking the true beginning of construction.
Aspen House was born more than 10 years ago when two mothers of sons with developmental disabilities imagined something better for their children and others like them.
“What started as a dream has now become a reality because of this incredible community,” said Pattie Copenhaver, executive director of Aspen House, “This groundbreaking is more than just the start of a building — it’s our community’s commitment to a future where individuals with developmental disabilities have the opportunity to thrive in a safe, supportive and inclusive environment.”
Construction is now underway, with continued opportunities for community members to support the project and help bring Aspen House fully to life.
