According to data released by Archuleta County Finance Director Chad Eaton on June 4, sales tax collections in Archuleta County for April were reported to be down 9.07 percent compared to figures from April 2025.

Eaton’s report notes that the 9.07 percent decrease translates to a total of $125,110.70 less received this April compared to April 2025.

For April 2026, Eaton notes that the Town of Pagosa Springs and Archuleta County received a total of $1,251,414.13 from the sales tax and retail marijuana sales tax, with $625,755.66 going to the county and $625,658.47 going to the town.

January saw a decrease of 10.64 percent ($149,587.01) in sales tax collections, while numbers for February reflected a 1.17 percent increase ($16,020.75). March figures reflected a 1.01 (1$15,560.32) percent decrease.

According to data in Eaton’s press release, the year-to-date comparison for January through April of this year shows a 4.55 percent decrease, or $258,391.45 less received compared to figures from January through April 2025.

Categories that were up in comparison to month-to-month comparison according to Eaton’s data include:

• Retail Trade at .93 percent, or $6,666.61.

• Finance and Insurance at 102.41 percent, or $1,034.02.

• Real Estate, Rental and Leasing at 8.05 percent, or $1,660.12.

• Professional, Scientific and Technical Services at 30.07 percent, or $2,824.

• Accommodation and Food Services at 19.49 percent, or $38,208.50.

• Miscellaneous at 5.01 percent, or $10,836.68.

In an interview, Commissioner Warren Brown commented that the sales tax collection numbers are a “big concern,” explaining that sales tax collections always have an effect on the county.

Brown mentioned that the decrease seen in April was not much of a surprise, due to the volume “or lack of” people in town.

Brown indicated that the Colorado Department of Transportation’s reconstruction project of U.S. 160 in downtown Pagosa Springs is still expected to be completed on time, by December of this year.
