The Pagosa Springs boys wrestling team had a big week last week, celebrating their seniors and winning five out of the six duals they competed in.

The Pirates hosted the Bayfield Wolverines for a dual on Thursday, Jan. 22, winning 54-30. They also got to celebrate their seniors in what was their final home competition in a Pirate uniform.

Colton Lucero got a special celebration on Thursday when he was presented in front of the fans for winning 100 matches in a Pirate uniform. Lucero is currently at 128 wins total.

“It’s real tough to do, especially down here,” coach Dan Janowsky said of Lucero’s feat. “You’ve got to get started when you’re a freshman. Colton was an outstanding freshman and placed fourth at state and beat seniors that were state placers ahead of him to climb that ladder, and that’s just how he got started.”

Other seniors receiving recognition for their high school career were Truman Vasek, Johnny Baker, Gabe Ramirez and Samuel Kelly.

“The night was special as it featured Pagosa’s seniors’ last match at home,” Janowsky wrote in an email to The SUN.

Four Pirates won matches against Bayfield and five others added forfeit points.

Garrett Elliot pinned his opponent after two minutes and 27 seconds wrestling at 113 pounds. Baker was pinned after 5:33 while wrestling at 126 pounds.
