The Pagosa Springs girls wrestling team had a busy week, first hosting Bayfield for a dual, then traveling to Ignacio for the Butch Melton Invitational, where Lady Pirate Laykyn Baxstrom received a special award.
The Lady Pirates defeated the Wolverines 36-24 on Thursday, Jan. 22, in their home dual.
At 105 pounds, Bella Jackson won by forfeit. Madisen Stretton pinned her opponent after one minute and 59 seconds while wrestling at 110 pounds. At 115 pounds, Sarah Thomas won by forfeit. Kelsey Matyniak was pinned after 21 seconds at 120 pounds. Corrina Galabota won by forfeit at 125 pounds. Kyley Matyniak pinned her opponent after 1:26 at 130 pounds. Audrina Smith was pinned after 1:28 while wrestling at 135 pounds. Laykyn Baxstrom won by forfeit while wrestling at 190 pounds.
“Pagosa Springs girls had another successful outing,” coach Dan Janowsky highlights in an email to The SUN.
On Saturday, Jan. 24, the Lady Pirates traveled to Ignacio for the Butch Melton Invitational, where they placed fourth out of nine teams.
“Top finishers for Pagosa were Madi Stretton and Laykyn Baxstrom,” wrote Janowsky, highlighting Baxstrom was also voted the tournament’s outstanding wrestler for the upper weights.
Baxstrom took first place and scored 25.5 points for the Lady Pirates. She pinned her first opponent after 1:54, won on an 18-3 technical fall in her second match, pinned her third opponent after 1:05 and pinned her final opponent after 4:58.
Her 4-0 record at the tournament moved her season record to a perfect 17-0.
Stretton also took first place, scoring 25 points for the Lady Pirates.
She pinned her first opponent after 1:30, her second opponent after 2:47 and her third opponent after 56 seconds. She won her final match by a 10-2 major decision.
Stretton now has a 20-3 record after her undefeated performance.
At 100 pounds, Jackson placed second and scored 18.5 points. Jackson won her first match on an 18-1 technical fall, pinned her next opponent after 2:31, won via a medical forfeit in her third match and was pinned in her final match after 3:33. Jackson moved to 19-6 on the season after going 3-1.
Kyley Matyniak placed second and scored 19 points.
She pinned her first three opponents, the first after 1:32, the second after 49 seconds and the third after 44 seconds. In her final match she lost by a 8-2 decision.
She is now 18-7 on the year after going 3-1 at the tournament.
Galabota placed third, scoring 13 points.
She won her first match, pinning her opponent after two minutes, but lost her second match after being pinned in 1:13. She came back and won her third match, pinning her opponent after 2:36, but lost her fourth match after being pinned in four minutes.
Galabota now has a 7-10 record after going 2-2 at the tournament.
At 115 pounds, Kelsey Matyniak placed fourth and scored seven points. She lost her first match after being pinned in 26 seconds, her second match after being pinned in 37 seconds and her third match via a 19-3 technical fall. She won her final match, pinning her opponent after 2:50.
Kelsey Matyniak’s record is now 6-17 on the season after going 1-3 at the tournament.
Smith placed fifth and scored three points for the Lady Pirates. She lost her first three matches, the first by fall after 1:41, the second by 18-3 technical fall and the third by fall after 49 seconds. Smith won her fourth match via a medical forfeit and lost her final match after she was pinned in 3:10.
Smith now holds a 9-16 record after going 1-4 at the tournament.
The Lady Pirates will be back on the mats this evening, Thursday, Jan. 29, when they head to Montezuma-Cortez High School for a dual beginning at 5:30 p.m..
The Lady Pirates will then head to Cañon City for the Cañon City Classic on Friday, Jan. 30, beginning at 9 a.m.
The following day, the Lady Pirates will be in action in Del Norte for the Rio Grande Showdown, with action beginning at 9 a.m.
