During spring break, the Pagosa Springs High School Lady Pirate soccer team isn’t practicing, but the team will jump back into action early next week with a game against Del Norte on Monday, March 30.
“You know, there’s some voluntary stuff, but I’m mostly leaving it on the athletes,” said coach Trevor Gian. “It felt like being able to have a game there on that Monday was gonna be just as good, if not better, than any practice we could have.”
The Lady Pirates rescheduled the Del Norte game earlier this season and Gian, along with the help of Athletic Director Chantelle Jordan, decided that Monday would be the best time to move the game to.
They will take on the Tigers at 4 p.m. in Del Norte on March 30.
The Tigers are 0-1 on the season. The Lady Pirates own a 1-1 record.
Gian has emphasized early this season that the girls have been lacking on-the-field reps.
“Obviously, I know it’s a game, and we wanna win it,” he said. “We wanna have a good result there. But, the benefit of getting on a full-size field in a game situation will help us go forward for the bulk of that season.”
The week’s action doesn’t stop with Monday’s action in Del Norte.
On Thursday, April 2, the Lady Pirates will travel to Telluride to take on the 2-2 Miners, and then they’ll host the Montezuma-Cortez Panthers, who are 0-1 on the season, on Saturday, April 4.
The Lady Pirates’ matchup with the Miners will kick off at 4 p.m., with their home matchup against the Panthers beginning at 11 a.m.
Despite not having as much preparation and practice as Gian would’ve liked before the start of the season, he noted he is excited to get out on the pitch and play, especially with the bulk of the season coming up in April.
“You know, it’s tough to have two games, take a little bit off, but I think every game we’re hoping to utilize it and improve,” he said. “Anything on the field helps us right now, on a full-size field.”
Gian stated he is hopeful that this upcoming week will help the Lady Pirates prepare for their busy April.
