Lady Pirates take third at Queens of the Mountain tournament

The Pagosa Springs High School Lady Pirate wrestling team traveled to Edwards to compete in the Queens of the Mountain tournament on Saturday, Jan. 17, finishing third out of 12 teams. 

All seven of the girls placed, with five placing in the top three. 

“[It was] Another big day for the wrestling team,” wrote coach Dan Janowsky in an email to The SUN.

Wrestling at 190 pounds, Laykyn Baxstrom was the only champion for the Lady Pirates on Saturday. 

She pinned her first opponent after one minute and 18 seconds, pinned her second opponent after 52 seconds and won by a 18-3 technical fall in her third match. In her final match, she won by 13-3 major decision, scoring 22.5 points for the Lady Pirates. 

Baxstrom improved her season record to 13-0.

Madisen Stretton placed second while wrestling at 110 pounds, scoring 14 points. 

Stretton lost her first match by 13-7 decision. She then came back and won her next two matches, the first by a 16-2 major decision and the second by a 9-0 major decision. 

Stretton now has a 15-3 record on the season.

Kyley Matyniak also placed second for the Lady Pirates while wrestling at 130 pounds. 

She won her first round match by 17-1 technical fall, won her second match on a medical forfeit and lost her last match after being pinned after 50 seconds. 

Matyniak scored 15.5 points and improved her record to 14-6 on the season.

Bella Jackson placed third for the Lady Pirates while wrestling at 105 pounds. 

Jackson lost in the first round after being pinned in 1:16, then won three straight. She won her next match by a 21-5 technical fall, pinned her opponent after two minutes in the third round and won by a 17-1 technical fall in the quarterfinals. Jackson then lost in the semifinal after being pinned in 3:03, but came back to pin her opponent in the third-place match after 3:38. 

Jackson scored 18 points and improved her season record to 15-5.

Corrina Galabota placed third, wrestling at 125 pounds and scoring 11 points. 

Galabota pinned her first opponent after 1:31, but lost her next two matches, the first by a fall after 2:44 and the second by a fall after 4:25. 

Galabota has a 4-7 record on the season for the Lady Pirates.

Kelsey Matyniak placed fifth while wrestling at 115 pounds, scoring two points for the Lady Pirates. 

Kelsey Matyniak lost her first two matches, the first by fall after 36 seconds and the second by fall after 5:40. She bounced back and won her third match, pinning her opponent after 1:19. She then lost her next two matches, the fourth by fall after 3:15 and the fifth by fall after 35 seconds. 

Kelsey Matyniak has a 5-14 record on the season.

Wrestling at 135 pounds, Audrina Smith placed sixth. 

Smith was pinned after 56 seconds in her first match, after 1:07 in her second match, after 3:20 in her third match, after 2:52 in her fourth match and after 1:20 in her fifth match. 

Smith has a 9-11 record on the year.

The Lady Pirates will be back in action on Thursday, Jan. 22, when they host a dual against Bayfield. 

This will be the last home event of the year for the team and is also senior night. 

Action is slated to begin around 5:30 p.m.

The Lady Pirates will then head to Ignacio for the Four Corners Girls Invite on Saturday, Jan. 24, with action set to begin at 8:30 a.m.
