Lady Pirates looking to build momentum ahead of postseason

The Pagosa Springs High School Lady Pirates basketball team split its matchups last week and now sit at 11-9 with two weeks left in the regular season. 

The Lady Pirates started the week with a home 32-15 loss to the No. 8 Alamosa Mean Moose on Friday, Feb. 13. 

The Lady Pirates were only down four after the first half after being outscored 10-6, but the Mean Moose scored 15 in the third and seven more in the fourth, outscoring the Lady Pirates 22-9 in the second half for the 17-point win. 

“We didn’t execute consistently for four quarters,” wrote coach Sarah Osborn in an email to The SUN. “Against a disciplined team like Alamosa, you can’t afford empty possessions on offense. We had stretches where we didn’t rebound the way we’re capable of, and allowed momentum to shift.”

Amber Snarr finished with nine points to lead the team. Kaila Limebrook had three, Adelyn Hittle added two and Lexi Campbell rounded out the scoring with one point. 

Limebrook led the team in rebounds with five. Campbell and Snarr each had three. Liana Vega had two. Charity Domingo, Ximena Garcia and Hittle each had one.

As a team, the Lady Pirates finished with 16 rebounds, nine steals, assisted on three of their four made field goals and turned the ball over 20 times.

The Lady Pirates bounced back on Saturday, Feb. 14, with a 31-24 win at Montezuma-Cortez. 

The game was tied at 14 apiece after the first half. 

The Lady Pirates outscored the No. 24 Panthers 17-10 in the second half for the seven-point win.

“I was proud of how the girls responded,” wrote Osborn. “We challenged them to bring more energy, toughness, and focus — and they did. We defended with more intensity, we adjusted in game time to Cortez game plan, and played with a chip on our shoulder.”

Snarr led the team in scoring once again, finishing with 10 points. Limebrook added seven, Hittle had six, Campbell scored four, Vega added three and Garcia scored one point to round out the scoring. 

Campbell led the Lady Pirates with eight rebounds, Snarr had six, Limebrook and Hittle each had five, Domingo had two, and Vega had one.

As a team, the Lady Pirates finished with 27 total rebounds, nine steals, assisted on four of their eight made field goals and turned the ball over 18 times.

With two weeks left to go in the regular season, the Lady Pirates are ranked 16th in 4A. 

They have two matchups this week, starting with a home game against third-ranked 3A Centauri on Thursday, Feb. 19, beginning at 5:30 p.m. 

The Falcons are 17-3 on the season.

The Lady Pirates will then round out the week with an away matchup against the No. 3-ranked 2A team Sanford on Friday, Feb. 20, at 6:30 p.m.

The Mustangs are 18-1 on the season. 

“These last games matter, and we want to build momentum going into postseason play,” wrote Osborn. “We’re focusing on sharpening fundamentals, staying healthy, and making sure we’re playing our best team basketball at the right time. The goal is to keep improving and finish the regular season with confidence.”
