Lady Pirates go 1-1 to open season

The Pagosa Springs High School Lady Pirate soccer team kicked off its season with a 10-0 win last week over Ignacio.

After two weeks of practices and walk-throughs, the Lady Pirates finally opened their 2026 season against Ignacio on Thursday, March 12.

The girls won 10-0 in their first action on a full-size field all season.

Coach Trevor Gian emphasized that he was impressed with the effort and the attitude of the girls in the game.

Terriana Cage led the Lady Pirates in the 10-goal effort with four. Tatiana Monterroso had a hat trick and an assist in the match. Xyra Belarmino, Ximena Garcia and Baylee Davis each scored a goal as well.

“There were some really great things offensively, pass, and defensively some good things, and a lot of stuff we can definitely work on,” Gian said.

On Saturday, March 14, the Lady Pirates hosted the Buena Vista Demons.

Gian stated he knew that the Lady Demons would be a tall task heading into the game, and they proved to be just that.

Pagosa Springs lost 10-0 to Buena Vista.

“Buena Vista was pretty much exactly what I thought they would be — very technical, athletic, big, fast, great through the middle, aggressive to the ball,” Gian said.

The girls started a little flat and allowed the Lady Demons to score seven goals in the first half, noted Gian.

Despite the slow start, Gian emphasized that he was very impressed with how the girls were able to switch gears and begin to compete with Buena Vista late in that first half and into the second half.

He indicated he felt that the girls contested some shots, played more physically and really just started fighting.

“If we’d have started the way we finished, I think we’d find a little bit different result in that game,” he said.

After the game, Gian explained told the girls that even though the loss hurts, it is a lesson and it teaches them how to get better.

The season is still very young and Gian indicated he knows his team will continue to improve.

The Lady Pirates won’t play their next game until Monday, March 30, when they travel to Del Norte.

In the meantime, the girls will continue to work in practice to get better every day, according to the coach.

During their extended break, Gian noted he wants to work on physicality, stringing possession together through different passing combinations, keeping shape, set pieces and being first to the ball.

“I know it’s a game and the results matter, but it’ll give us a chance to get on a full-size field in a competitive atmosphere and start getting prepared for that crazy busy April,” Gian said of the Del Norte game.
