Lady Pirates gearing up to face tough opponents at Holy Family invite

The Pagosa Springs High School Lady Pirate basketball team will head to Broomfield this week as they open up the new year at the Holy Family Invite.

The Lady Pirates are 3-3 heading into the tournament and are looking to start the new year off strong.

“The first two games after the break are especially important because they come against strong opponents,” wrote Lady Pirates’ coach Sarah Osborn in an email to The SUN. “Playing two quality teams will give us a clear picture of where we stand and what areas need improvement if we want to be serious playoff contenders by the end of the season.”

The Lady Pirates will open the tournament against the Holy Family Tigers on Friday, Jan. 2, at 6 p.m.

The Tigers are 3-2 heading into the matchup.

Then, on Saturday, Jan. 3, the Lady Pirates will face the Kent Denver Sun Devils at noon.

The Sun Devils hold a 3-4 record this season.

The Tigers and Sun Devils faced off against each other earlier this season, with the Tigers pulling off the win 67-52.

Last year Holy Family lost in the final four of the 4A state playoffs. Kent Denver made the sweet 16 of the 4A state playoffs.

Osborn emphasized that both of these matchups will really highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the team and will help them understand the adjustments that need to be made as they move into league play later in January.

“We are still learning to play together as a team, and figuring out each others individual’s strengths,” Osborn wrote. “We are excited to go play in the Holy Family tournament and see who steps up as leaders for us this weekend.”
