The Pagosa Springs High School Lady Pirate swim team competed in the Sargent swim meet against Sargent at Adams State University on Thursday, Dec. 18.
The Lady Pirates lost in a close one to Sargent 82-81.
“The meet went well, we had some best times and a few mistakes on starts and turns,” wrote coach Heather Miller in an email to The SUN. “We came closer to beating Sargent than we have in many years.”
The first event of the meet was the 200-yard medley relay. The Pagosa team of Marlowe Hedgecock, Leah Blackman, Chloe Gantt and Asia Gorman placed second with a time of two minutes, 20.12 seconds. The team of Ruby Snell, Gianna Shaeffer, Grace Cram and Leilani Snell took third with a time of 2:36.95. The team of Brooklyn Trujillo, Cheyenne Trujillo, Natalia Monterroso and Kailey Vincent finished fourth with a time of 2:59.95.
Event two was the 200-yard freestyle. The Lady Pirates took third, fifth and sixth. Angela Gomez finished third with a time of 2:53.86, Lucia River finished fifth with a time of 3:39.11, and Isa Forster finished sixth with a time of 4:01.12.
The 200-yard individual medley was the third event, with the Lady Pirates finishing first and second. Gantt finished first with a time of 2:54.86 and Ruby Snell finished second with a time of 3:37.89. Kaillen Taylor also swam the race, but was disqualified.
The fourth event, the 50-yard freestyle, was the largest event of the night. Seventeen girls total raced, with the Lady Pirates taking three of the top six spots. Gorman finished second with a time 29.75, knocking 1.03 seconds off her seed time. Hedgecock finished right behind her with a time of 30.90, and Cram rounded out the top six, finishing sixth with a time of 32.78.
Leilani Snell swam a time of 33.08, Cheyenne Trujillo finished with a time of 36.42, Vincent finished with a time of 36.57, Brooklyn Trujillo finished with a time of 38.01, Avery Book finished with a time of 40.04, Angelique Buffum swam a time of 42.41 and Arya Patel logged a time of 48.36.
Gantt took first in the next event, the 100-yard butterfly, with a time of 1:16.98. Blackman finished third with a time of 1:46.30 and Schaeffer finished fourth with a time of 1:46.34.
The 100-yard freestyle was the next event, and the Lady Pirates had six swimmers in the race. The top finisher was Cheyenne Trujillo, who finished fourth with a time of 1:30.00. Sister Brooklyn Trujillo was right behind her, finishing fifth with a time of 1:30.03.
While not competing for team points, Book finished with a time of 1:27.18, knocking more than seven seconds off her seed time. Vincent swam a time of 1:33.42, Buffum finished with a time of 1:38.73, and Monterroso was disqualified.
The Lady Pirates swept the podium in the next event, the 500-yard freestyle. Gorman swam a 6:53.66, cutting two seconds off her seed time to take first in the event. Cram finished second with a time of 7:24.68, and Hedgecock finished third with a time of 7:41.76.
The ninth event of the meet was the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Lady Pirate team of Shaeffer, Blackman, Gomez and Brooklyn Trujillo swam a 2:21.23 and took second. The team of Vincent, Buffum, Rivera and Book swam a 2:40.23 and took third.
The Lady Pirates had six swimmers in the 10th event of the meet, the 100-yard backstroke. Ruby Snell was the Lady Pirates’ top finisher, taking third with a time of 1:36.10. Monterroso finished fifth with a time of 1:38.34, cutting just under seven seconds from her seed time. Gomez finished sixth with a time of 1:39.66. Leilani Snell finished with a time of 1:38.89, Forster finished with a time of 2:19.30 and Taylor finished with a time of 2:57.90.
The last individual event was the 100-yard breaststroke. Shaeffer swam a 1:27.19 and held on at the end of the race to take first place in an amazing race for the Lady Pirates, wrote Miller.
Rivera swam a 1:58.62 and finished fifth and Blackman was disqualified. While not competing for team points, Patel swam a 2:26.17.
In the final event of the night, the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Lady Pirates finished first, third and fifth. The team of Gorman, Hedgecock, Cram and Gantt finished first with a time of 4:48.67. The team of Leilani Snell, Monterroso, Cheyenne Trujillo and Gomez finished third with a time of 5:28.81. The team of Taylor, Book, Forster and Buffum finished fifth with a time of 7:08.43.
The Lady Pirates are now on winter break and will return to action on Jan. 9, 2026, when they will face Delta at Colorado Mesa University.
