Beyond providing direct services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence, Rise Above Violence works to end the cycle of violence at its source. One of the most powerful ways Rise does this is by stopping violence before it even begins.
Each school year, Rise youth advocates work with local youth to shape a safer, kinder future for Pagosa Springs by teaching healthy relationship behaviors early on.
Their objective is clear: equip students with the self-esteem, knowledge and critical awareness needed to recognize red flags early and foster respectful, safe connections.
Through partnerships with schools and community organizations, Rise teaches young people to spot warning signs of unhealthy behavior before those dynamics turn abusive. These signs include isolation, extreme jealousy, possessiveness and controlling behavior.
Rise’s work encourages students to learn where boundaries belong, how to manage conflict and how to build resilience against bullying, drama and low self-worth.
The program also empowers area youth to advocate for positive change by having high schoolers lead campaigns like February’s Teen Dating Violence Awareness and May’s Mental Health Walk.
Girls on the Run: registration open now
Did you know, Rise hosts a Girls on the Run chapter here in the county?
This program is designed for girls in third through fifth grade, and registration is currently open for the fall season, which starts on Sept. 9.
Girls on the Run is an evidence-based youth development program designed to support the physical, emotional and social well-being of young participants.
Over the course of the season, girls attend educational sessions focused on confidence, emotional wellness, healthy relationships, goal setting, teamwork and communication skills while preparing for their end-of-season 5K.

Runway for Rise: raising funds for youth programs
These essential youth education services don’t happen without community support.
Money raised from the upcoming Runway for Rise event on Oct. 3 directly funds these programs.
During the 2025-2026 school year, Rise youth advocates provided prevention education to 624 students in the Archuleta School District.
As we start another school year, Rise is looking forward to expanding education services on healthy relationships and reaching young people.
Meet Another Runway Team: Team PCI, Wild and Styled
The Pagosa Community Initiative (PCI) is one of many local organizations Rise works closely with so that, together, we can all rise above violence. We are thrilled to have them as a Runway team this year and can’t wait to see what they design.
Team PCI, Wild and Styled believes that every person deserves to feel safe, supported, and valued.
“We rise for the youth in our community — to help create a future where safety, respect and healthy relationships are the foundation for every child to thrive,” the team states.
Teammates Randye, Courtney, Rebecca and Chrissy stand with Rise in building a community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
