The planned closure of the U.S. 160 and Lewis Street intersection was postponed from Wednesday, March 11, to Monday, March 16, due to emergency utility repairs.
On Monday, March 10, the Colorado Department of Transportation announced the change, citing the emergency utility repairs on the north side of the 3rd Street intersection with U.S. 160 as the reason for the change.
The U.S. 160 and 3rd Street intersection is anticipated to be closed through Friday, March 13, according to the agency.
Construction crews will now close Lewis Street at U.S. 160 on Monday, March 16, beginning at 9 a.m. to begin demolition to start work on the underground utilities, it notes.
Motorists are encouraged to use 4th Street as an alternative to Lewis Street.
The Lewis Street and U.S. 160 intersection closure will be in place until late May/early June, according to the agency. Access to north 5th Street and businesses north of the intersection will be available via 4th Street.
“Where Lewis Street intersects U.S. 160 is one of the most difficult intersections the project team is working on,” the agency states. “The underground utility work includes demolition and replacement of the geothermal, water and sewer lines from the bottom up. The Lewis Street intersection will then be built back with new ADA-accessible curb and gutter and concrete paving.”
