Higher learning versus human education

Posted

I’ve always admired and enjoyed those who have had the opportunity to pursue higher education. From formal university affiliations, they displayed their degrees on their office walls and took pride in their positions and titles.

I wanted that college education, even a seminary degree, for myself. That would give me credence. Others would believe and accept what I said as true and real in my teaching of the Bible.

I didn’t receive a degree. I came through a different door, a door that would seem lesser — on my knees, pouring over the scriptures and begging God that I might know Him. Even though I craved God’s wisdom, it didn’t come to me through human establishments of higher education.

My knowledge came through devouring the Bible by faith. Through the Holy Spirit, I accepted God’s words to be absolute — existing independently. Not from megachurches, television preachers or prophets, where many gathered with itchy ears, but truth that resonated in me.

The Lord showed me early in my walk with Him that “There’s no need for anyone to keep teaching you. His anointing teaches you all that you need to know, for it will lead you into truth …” (1 John 2:27, TPT).

At the end of the road, there is much I wish I had known early in my walk. I know only what I know, what I gleaned from heaven. All else is human knowledge. As believers we need to be taught by spirit-filled leaders, but we also need to rely on the Holy Spirit, who abides in us and will take us to higher thinking. He will also put a check in our spirits when something isn’t right.

In Isaiah 55:8-9 (NKJV) it states, “‘My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,’ says the Lord. ‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.’”

I took it to heart and trusted Him to take my thoughts to a higher place, higher than traditional education. I purchased a book titled “Song of Songs: A Biblical-Theological, Allegorical, Christological interpretation.” I wanted to do a fact check to make sure all my theological information was correct as I finish the final edit on my new book.

This book carried endorsements from great religious men with great swelling titles, positions — seminarians and pastors of churches — expounding that this book could be relied upon. As I read through it, I became aware of the legalism, the law, which kills, human knowledge about sexual things and how to save marriages. It lacked the beautiful truth about God’s heart and His church and the real reason for Song of Solomon to be in the pages of the Bible.

The author followed the law, but did not write it from the higher plane that the Lord talked about in Isaiah —those words that pour from the heart of God. He missed the sweetness of the book and the heart of this Song of Songs as he brought book learning to the readers.

His theology was correct, but his heart lacked the true relationship of the Lord. I threw the book across the kitchen floor. He had missed the person of Jesus and His love for His bride, the church.

I picked up the book and realized a misconception I clung to for years — those with a higher education had a corner on God which I didn’t have. Wrong. With big words, puffed up knowledge and religion, this book with all these religious leaders’ endorsements crucified the simple essence of the book, the love of God.

The Lord pressed on my heart to write a book on Song of Solomon from the full revelation God had given me in these later years. I didn’t know why. Now, I know. There is a difference between human knowledge and God’s revelation knowledge. I was carrying His absolute truth, not propped up by human thought, but higher thoughts from the Divine.

Final brushstroke: God’s wisdom comes from seeking God’s heart on our knees. We can trust the Spirit of God, who lives in us. He doesn’t lie.
