Hearing loss is far more than a routine communication challenge. Growing research suggests that hearing health is deeply connected to brain health, social engagement and healthy aging.
A recent analysis from the Framingham Heart Study found that midlife hearing loss was associated with changes in brain structure, executive function declines and a 71% higher risk of developing dementia over 15 years.
While the study shows an association rather than direct causation, it adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting hearing care is a vital component of cognitive health.
For audiologist Robert Melton, owner of Hearing and Tinnitus Solutions in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, the research reinforces the importance of taking a proactive approach to lifelong care.
“Taking care of your hearing is about more than hearing better today,” Melton said. “It may also be an important part of staying connected, engaged, independent and cognitively healthy as we age.”
Melton encourages adults to establish a hearing baseline and monitor changes over time rather than waiting for severe problems to develop. Untreated hearing difficulties increase the effort required to follow conversations and often lead to social withdrawal.
At Hearing and Tinnitus Solutions, hearing health is viewed like monitoring vision or blood pressure as part of routine preventive health care.
As an independent, locally owned practice, the clinic provides comprehensive evaluations, earwax management, advanced hearing technology and specialized tinnitus treatments not widely available in the region.
In recognition of Audiology Awareness Month in October, Hearing and Tinnitus Solutions is offering a special promotion on premium hearing technology. To schedule a baseline evaluation, call 970-444-2314 or visit htsaudiology.com.
