Growing up in Pagosa in the ‘90s and as part of the Pagosa Lakes Porpoises swim team, I fondly remember the Pagosa Lakes High-Tri as a significant milestone we eagerly anticipated.
Since joining the Pagosa Lakes Property Owners Association (PLPOA) as an employee in 2015, I was thrilled to revive the triathlon tradition in 2017. We introduced the What’ SUP Triathlon, a unique event that combined biking, running and stand-up paddleboarding to take advantage of our beautiful lakes and the SUP craze.
After a hiatus in 2020-2021 and a cancellation in 2022 due to lightning, we successfully brought back the event in 2023 with great enthusiasm.
The venue was changed to the PLPOA Recreation Center to provide better amenities such as bathrooms and electricity. Participants had the option to swim or paddle for the water segment, but with only one paddler last year, we’ve adapted this year’s event to a traditional mini triathlon: swim, bike and run.
This shift has inspired a new name and vibe: the Give it a Tri – A PLPOA Triathlon and End of Summer Bash on Aug. 24.
This year, we’re excited to include a kid’s triathlon and allow both the adult and kid triathletes to be completed individually or as a team.
If triathlons aren’t your thing, join us at noon for the community festivities featuring a cornhole tournament, live music, a beer garden, food vendors, door prizes and Rec Center membership specials.
Enjoy our outdoor amenities, including a playground, yard games and volleyball. Bring a chair or blanket to relax on the lawn.
To support your training needs, if you register for the triathlon and are not a PLPOA member, you will be eligible for a $30 training membership at the Rec Center throughout August.
