A fiber cut Tuesday afternoon, April 28, left many without cell, landline and internet service for several hours.

According to Eric Hittle, Archuleta County Broadband Services Management Office director, The CenturyLink/Lumen fiber the community currently uses to carry all fiberoptic traffic from Pagosa Springs to Durango began experiencing an issue at about 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 28.

The outage was later confirmed to be due to a fiber line cut from construction along U.S. 160, according to Hittle.

“The main fiber line was not located by the fiber owner before the utility locate deadline expired, leading to the line strike,” Hittle wrote in an update on the situation. “Crews are currently one site propping the fiber for repair, but repair will likely not occur until late tonight, into tomorrow early morning.”

That repair took place about 11 p.m. Tuesday.

According to Hittle, the outage affects all cellphone services from local towers, Zito Internet, CenturyLink DSL and Clearnetworx Internet, as well as non-emergency landline services.
