The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) announced Monday afternoon that it has arrested a father and teenage son for the July 2 murder of the boy’s mother in Pagosa Springs.
Charles Christopher Martinez, age 43, and his 17-year-old son, Hevon Martinez, both of Cortez, have both been booked on the count of first-degree murder, according to CBI.
The teen, who was already in custody on separate charges, will be charged as an adult, according to CBI.
His father was taken into custody in Cortez and booked into the Archuleta County Detention Center Monday, according to the agency.
On Monday afternoon, 6th Judicial District Judge Kim Shropshire set Charles Martinez’s bond at $2.5 million cash surety, citing in part the severity of the charges.
The investigation began on the morning of July 2, when 911 dispatch operators received an emergency call from a phone belonging to 39-year-old Chrystal Snow, CBI press releases describe. When Archuleta County deputies arrived at her home, they discovered she had been shot to death.
According to a press release from the Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) released shortly after the incident, the ACSO was dispatched to a 911 open line in the 1000 block of County Road 700 at approximately 2:20 a.m. on July 2.
The ACSO press release further notes the scene was immediately secured and the ACSO requested support from the CBI, with CBI agreeing to be the lead investigative agency.
“At this time investigators believe Snow called 911 shortly before she died from her injuries,” a July 3 CBI press release states.
In the following days, CBI announced persons of interest had been identified, as well as that CBI agents believe it was a targeted shooting and there was not an active threat to the public.
CBI received assistance in this case from the Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office, the Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office, the Cortez Police Department and the 6th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, the Monday press release notes.
Both suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law, CBI notes.
