Fashion meets purpose: Runway for Rise set to return for fourth year

Posted

The creative energy is building as Rise Above Violence prepares to host its fourth annual Runway for Rise Recycled Fashion Gala on Saturday, Oct. 3.

This unique fundraising event challenges 10 teams to transform unconventional materials — thrift-store finds, nature elements, plastic and cardboard — into runway-worthy fashion statements.

But this competition is about far more than style; it’s about saving lives.

Team Sparkle Society takes the stage

Among this year’s competitors is Team Sparkle Society, making their debut appearance at the gala.

Team members Natalie Ortega, Stephanie Pham, Amy Johnson, Falisha Plake and Alison Trujillo share a powerful mission statement: “Ending domestic violence starts with awareness, grows through education, and succeeds through action.”

Now, they’re putting that philosophy into practice, channeling their creativity and passion into both their fashion creation and fundraising efforts.

The community can support Team Sparkle Society through online voting, where every vote equals one dollar and is donated directly to Rise. These funds provide critical help and safety to survivors of violence, making each vote a tangible act of support for those in need.

A new addition: custom fashion auction

This year’s event introduces an exciting element: a live auction featuring a one-of-a-kind custom fashion piece by local designer Adrienne Young.

Raised in Pagosa Springs, Young pursued her passion for fashion by studying and working in Los Angeles for eight years before returning home to continue her craft. Now back in her hometown, she creates custom pieces from her home studio and has designed for Thingamajig Theatre Company.

For this special auction, Young has created two stunning renderings for bidders to choose from—an elegant gown and a luxurious robe. Both pieces, titled “The Designs of Many Colors,” are crafted from vintage scarves and draw inspiration from Dolly Parton’s beloved song “Coat of Many Colors” and its empowering message.

The highest bidder will select which design Young will tailor-make exclusively for them. Preview both renderings now at Rise Above Violence’s website.

Supporting survivors through legal advocacy

Every dollar raised through Runway for Rise supports Rise Above Violence’s comprehensive services for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. One crucial area of support is legal advocacy, helping survivors navigate the often-daunting criminal and civil justice systems.

Rise’s dedicated legal and court advocates provide civil protection order assistance, court accompaniment and navigation, victim compensation guidance, and safety planning with legal options.

By demystifying legal processes and ensuring victims never face the courtroom alone, the organization helps transform fear into resilience and independence.

In 2025, Rise helped 200 clients with court and legal support, including providing protection order assistance and preparation 130 times.

Thanks to fundraisers like Runway for Rise and generous community support, these services are offered completely free of charge.

Join the movement

With only a few seats remaining, time is running out to secure tickets for the live event.

However, voting remains open until the night of the gala, so there’s still time to support Team Sparkle Society and the nine other competing teams.

Don’t miss this opportunity to witness creativity, compassion and community come together for a vital cause. Purchase tickets, cast your votes, and view Young’s custom designs at www.riseaboveviolence.org.
