When disaster strikes, whether a flood, fire or other crisis, our neighbors are often the first ones in need of care and support.
The Community United Methodist Church is hosting an emergency response training (ERT) on Nov. 8 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the church’s fellowship hall (434 Lewis St.).
This training, led by ERT professionals certified through United Methodist Committee on Relief, will prepare participants to respond effectively and compassionately in times of disaster, both locally and beyond. ERT volunteers are often deployed after the immediate danger has passed, once first responders have cleared the area and it is safe to begin recovery work.
Participants will learn about disaster response protocols, basic safety procedures, and the practical skills needed for clean-up and recovery efforts. Just as important, trainees will learn the art of listening with compassion, which is an essential part of helping communities heal after trauma. Often, being present and listening to someone’s story is just as valuable as swinging a hammer or clearing debris.
ERT teams work only at the request and invitation of local communities, partnering to provide the help that is needed most. This work is guided by a deep respect for the dignity and voice of those affected, never assuming and always asking.
This training is open to everyone in the community; you do not have to be a member of the Community United Methodist Church, or even a person of faith, to participate.
The Community United Methodist Church is an affirming and inclusive faith community; ERT work is nondiscriminatory and non-evangelical. Volunteers serve simply out of a desire to help their neighbors, no strings attached. You must be 18 or older, and background checks and Safe Sanctuary training is required to be deployed in the field, as you may at times be working with minors.
Registration is free, and snacks, lunch and child care will be provided. Parking is available in the church lot.
