Some stories come full circle in ways you could never plan.
At the Humane Society of Pagosa Springs’ 31st annual Auction for the Animals, one extraordinary piece of our history found its way back to the mission it helped inspire.
During the live auction, a saddle once owned and ridden by beloved singer-songwriter Dan Fogelberg sold for an incredible $20,000.
More than an auction item, it was a tangible reminder of a remarkable connection between Fogelberg and the animals of Pagosa Springs, a connection that began more than 40 years ago.
In 1984, the organization that would become Humane Society of Pagosa Springs was only beginning to take shape. Fogelberg stepped forward to help by volunteering his time and talent for a concert benefiting animals in our community. The event raised $20,000, helping make the construction of the original animal shelter possible.
That shelter became a place of refuge for countless animals with nowhere else to go.
Decades later, the saddle that once belonged to the man who helped make that shelter possible was donated to our auction. Its sale will now help provide food, shelter, medical care and second chances to animals who need us today.
There is something deeply moving about that.
The man who helped create our shelter in the beginning has, in an unexpected way, helped sustain our mission for the future.
Although Fogelberg passed away nearly 20 years ago, his impact continues to be felt here. His songs may be part of his lasting legacy, but for the Humane Society of Pagosa Springs, it is his kindness that we remember most.
And on a night dedicated to giving animals a second chance, his legacy gave us one more reason to believe that compassion can echo across generations.
We are incredibly grateful to everyone who made this year’s Auction for the Animals possible. Every ticket purchased, paddle raised, donation made and item won helps us continue the work that began so many years ago.
Fogelberg helped give our mission a beginning. His legacy is helping us carry it forward.
