Auditions for the Curtains Up Pagosa production of “Matilda the Musical” will be held in the Pagosa Springs High School (PSHS) band room on Thursday, April 24, and Friday, April 25, from 6 to 9 p.m.
The audition will require candidates to present a 30- to 60-second monologue and 30- to 60-second song. A short dance number will be taught to those auditioning as part of the audition process. All community members are invited to join this production as the cast will feature both adults and children (who should be at least 6 years old).
“Matilda” will have four performances on the PSHS stage: June 26-28 at 7 p.m. and a matinee at 2 p.m. on June 29.
The show will be directed by Pagosa theater veterans Krisha Doocy and Gus Palma, with musical direction by Leo Baughman. Music will be performed by the Pagosa Springs Community Band.
“Matilda the Musical” is based on the 1988 novel “Matilda” by Roald Dahl, the acclaimed author of “James and the Giant Peach.”
The musical’s narrative centers on Matilda Wormwood, a precocious young girl who loves reading and possesses a keen sense of justice. She uses her wit and telekinetic powers to right the perceived wrongs in her life and the lives of those closest to her.
This show originally opened in London in 2010 and is still playing there to packed audiences as the 15th longest-running production in London’s West End history.
Rehearsals for our show will commence the week of April 28, usually from 6 to 9 p.m. School-age performers will be dismissed by 8 p.m. while school is still in session.
As our community theater, Curtains Up Pagosa also welcomes anyone interested in being a crew member for this show, as sets, costumes and backstage work require those specific skills to make “Matilda” come alive. If interested, drop by one of the audition sessions or send a note to aldwell@verizon.net.
