Curtains Up Pagosa selects 2025 board of directors, announces ‘Matilda, the Musical’ to be staged in June

Our community theater, Curtains Up Pagosa (CUP), has elected its 2025 board of directors, who will guide the production of two musical shows this season.

Led by its veteran board members, Ricardo Martinez as president and Nora Martinez as treasurer, the board includes newly elected members and CUP favorites Krisha Doocy, Gus Palma and Anika Thomas. They join current board members Heather Simpson and Tony Aldwell.

CUP’s mission is to “Nurture, educate, inspire, and strengthen Pagosa’s artists through the power of the performing arts, and to entertain our community by providing a superior theatrical experience.” We do so by utilizing a broad selection of Pagosa Springs community members as actors, technical crews and the Pagosa Springs Community Band, thereby utilizing 75-100 Pagosans to produce our shows.

The 2025 season will feature summer and fall shows, starting with “Matilda, the Musical,” with four performances, June 26 to 29, followed by a holiday-themed show in late fall. Both shows will be staged at Pagosa Springs High School.

“Matilda, the Musical” is based on the 1988 novel “Matilda” by Roald Dahl, the acclaimed author of “James and the Giant Peach.”

The musical’s narrative centers on Matilda Wormwood, a precocious young girl who loves reading and possesses a keen sense of justice. She uses her wit and telekinetic powers to right the perceived wrongs in her life and the lives of those closest to her.

Auditions for “Matilda” will be held in the high school band room on April 24 and 25 from 5:30 to 8 p.m., and will require candidates to present a 30-60 second monologue and 30-60 second song. All community members are invited to join this production as recent casts have included Pagosans from ages 7 to 75.

CUP is a volunteer organization and, in addition to cast members, relies on community members to assist with the production tasks of set construction, costume creation and stage management. Unlike many community theaters, CUP productions feature a pit orchestra providing live music, courtesy of the Pagosa Springs Community Band.

As a nonprofit and volunteer entity, CUP fully relies on community participation to stage its productions, including financial support. As such, CUP welcomes show sponsors and donations, all of which directly support show production, as well as providing two annual scholarships awarded to younger community members pursuing music or theater studies.

CUP looks forward to presenting a highly entertaining performance of “Matilda”in June, featuring a stage and pit full of talented Pagosa Country performers, with lively Pagosa audiences cheering us on.

Come audition, act, build, play or applaud us we entertain and educate our community.
