On Thursday, July 24, at 6 p.m. at the Community United Methodist Church (CUMC) on Lewis Street, Creation Care Pagosa will host Al Pfister for his presentation of a program entitled “Fire in Our Lives.”
The lack of snow this past winter, coupled with the delayed appearance of this year’s monsoon, has heightened our awareness of how vulnerable our community is to wildfire.
Indeed, several small (thankfully), lightning-caused fires have been responded to within a few miles of Pagosa Springs in the past couple of weeks.
Fire is a natural process in the dry-mixed conifer forests of our region, making our choice of building sites more problematic.
But, there are things we can do to help make our homes and our community less likely to experience the catastrophic consequences of wildfires.
Pfister will enlighten us on actions we can take and programs available to help reduce the threat and impact of wildfires in our area.
Pfister retired after more than 30 years as a fish and wildlife biologist and natural resource manager for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other federal agencies.
He is well-known in Pagosa Springs, having served on several boards and committees, including the Upper San Juan Watershed Enhancement Partnership, San Juan Water Conservancy District, Pagosa Pickleball Club, Geothermal Greenhouse Partnership and Weminuche Audubon, as well as serving as an ambassador for the Wildfire Adapted Partnership.
In lieu of a community meal, we have opted to host a dessert pot-luck with this month’s meeting. We will provide ice cream and some toppings. Please bring some of your favorite desserts to share. Please RSVP if you plan on attending, or, if you have questions, please email the CUMC secretary (secretary@cumcps.org) or Herb Grover (hgroverco@gmail.com).
