After announcing on Wednesday his intent to take a long-term leave of absence for health reasons, Archuleta County Coroner Dan Keuning announced his resignation today, June 21.
"It is with great sadness that I would like to request that my medical leave of absence be completed today and my immediate resignation be accepted," Keuning wrote in a letter addressed to the county's human resources department, commissioners, administrator and attorney.
Keuning's resignation is effective today.
"This resignation comes after discussion with the county attorney, Human Resources, and county manager," Keuning wrote. "I believe that by being on disability long term would have a negative impact on the Office of Coroner and Deputy Coroners and leave the position unfilled until January 2019. With my resignation the BOCC can appoint an interim coroner to lead the great team of professionals that we have developed. Caring for the citizens of this county should be the top priority."
Keuning ends the letter with an expression of appreciation for the support received in the four years he served as coroner.
