Continuing the work: Community responds to Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Posted

As Sexual Assault Awareness Month comes to a close, we are reminded that awareness is not confined to a single month, and neither is the work.

April has served as a powerful opportunity for our community to come together, to learn, to show support and to take meaningful steps toward preventing sexual violence. But what stands out most is not just the awareness raised, it is the action taken.

Throughout the month, individuals, businesses and organizations showed up in visible and meaningful ways. From participating in Wear Teal Day, to attending events, to engaging in conversations that challenge stigma and misinformation, our community demonstrated a shared commitment to supporting survivors and promoting a culture of respect and accountability. Each action, no matter how small it may have seemed, contributed to a larger movement.

Denim Day and the movie fundraiser were powerful examples of that collective effort. These events created space not only for awareness, but for connection, reflection and solidarity. They served as a reminder that when a community comes together with intention, it can create an environment where survivors feel seen, supported and believed.

One of the most important messages to carry forward is that support does not end when the month does.

Survivors live with the impacts of sexual violence every day, and so must our commitment to showing up for them. This means continuing to listen without judgment, to challenge harmful attitudes, and to foster spaces where people feel safe to speak and be heard.

It also means recognizing the role each of us plays in prevention. Creating change does not require grand gestures; it requires consistency. It is found in everyday actions, in the conversations we have, in the boundaries we respect, and in the accountability we hold ourselves and others to. These small, intentional choices shape the culture we live in.

As we move beyond April, the invitation remains the same: Continue the work. Stay engaged. Stay informed. Speak up when it matters. Support the organizations and individuals doing this work year-round. Most importantly, continue to build a community where safety, dignity and respect are not seasonal values, but everyday expectations.

To everyone who participated, attended, supported and showed up this month, thank you. Together, we are not only raising awareness, we are building a community that is committed to action, now and moving forward.
