On Sunday, June 7, the Community United Methodist Church is doing something simple.
We are going outside. There will be one service at 10:30 a.m. in Town Park (“Pirate Park”) right by the San Juan River. We will worship together, share a potluck lunch and spend some time by the water that runs through the heart of this valley.
This is part of a yearlong series we have been in called the “Seven Longings,” exploring the deep human hungers that most of us carry whether we have ever been inside a church or not.
This week we are sitting with a passage from John 7 where Jesus stands up in the middle of a crowded public festival and calls out to anyone who is thirsty.
We have been thinking about our river a lot lately. The snowpack this year was one of the lowest on record, or so I’ve heard. The San Juan is running at a fraction of what it should be. Real water is finite. Real rivers can run dry. The kind of thirst Jesus is talking about, and the kind of water he is offering, does not depend on what fell in the mountains last winter.
If you have been away from church for a while, or have never been, or are just looking for a place to belong in this valley, come find us by the river on Sunday morning.
Bring a dish. Bring a chair. Bring a plate and cutlery to reduce waste. Bring whoever needs to come with you.
Everyone is welcome. No exceptions.
