The Community United Methodist Church will continues its “Direction: Following the Way” sermon series this Sunday, Aug. 30, with a message titled “Crossing Over” drawn from Joshua 3, the next-to-last sermon before the Labor Day weekend finale on Sept. 6.
In a special fifth-Sunday format, the congregation will gather for one combined service at 10:30 a.m. at 434 Lewis St. The Pagosa Community Initiative will be sharing its work during the service. A potluck lunch will follow at 11:30 a.m. in the fellowship hall; everyone is invited to bring a dish to share.
The sermon draws on the story of the Israelites crossing the Jordan River at flood stage, the moment when the priests stepped into the water before it parted, and the miracle followed the step. Pastor Ken Daniell will connect that ancient crossing to the season turning in Pagosa Springs right now, the cooler mornings, the quieter streets, the signs of fall already arriving before the calendar catches up.
“The Jordan was at flood stage,” said Daniell. “God didn’t wait for calm water to ask them to cross. The priests stepped in, and then the water parted. That’s still how it works. The miracle is calibrated to the leap.”
The “Direction” series has run since Aug. 2, exploring what it means to walk faithfully when the road ahead is unclear. The series concludes on Sunday, Sept. 6, Labor Day weekend, with “The Way Forward” from John 14 at both the 8:15 and 11 a.m. services. Communion will be served.
The Community United Methodist Church is a progressive, inclusive and affirming congregation. All are welcome.
