Community United Methodist Church to continue ‘Direction’ series with ‘Choose This Day’

Posted

The Community United Methodist Church will continue its “Direction: Following the Way” sermon series this Sunday, Aug. 23, with a message titled “Choose This Day” drawn from Joshua 24:14–15.

Services are at 8:15 and 11 a.m. at 434 Lewis St.

In one of the most dramatic moments in the Hebrew scriptures, Joshua gathers the entire community, every tribe, every family, every elder, and gives them a choice. Not someday. Not eventually. This day. Whom will you serve?

Pastor Ken Daniell will explore what it means to make a deliberate, self-defining choice in a culture of drift, drawing on the family systems work of Murray Bowen and Edwin Friedman, the wisdom of James about fresh and salt water from the same spring, and Jesus’s own words about anxiety and presence.

“We are all very good at drifting,” said Daniell, “toward whatever is most comfortable, most convenient, most familiar. Chronic anxiety keeps us just unsettled enough to avoid the hard work of actually deciding who we are and what we are for. Joshua calls the whole community back from that drift and says, choose. Out loud. Today.”

The sermon is the fourth in the six-week “Direction” series, which will run through Labor Day weekend.

The Community United Methodist Church is a progressive, inclusive and affirming congregation committed to serving the Pagosa Springs community. All are welcome.
