Community United Methodist Church announces ‘The Unlikely Advent’ sermon series beginning Nov. 30

Community United Methodist Church warmly invites the community to a new Advent sermon series, “The Unlikely Advent,” beginning Sunday, Nov. 30, with services at 8:15 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Inspired by Rachel Billups’ book “The Unlikely Advent,” this four-week series explores one of the most surprising truths of the Christmas story: God often shows up through the people and moments we least expect.

The series walks with biblical characters who felt overlooked, unprepared, unqualified or unlikely, and reminds us that many of us have felt the same way. We wonder if we’ve missed God’s presence, if we’re doing life “right” or if peace is possible in a season full of hurry. But scripture shows us that God delights in meeting ordinary people in very ordinary moments, transforming them, and us, through hope, peace, joy and love.

“As a community, many of us know what it feels like to question our place or wonder if we measure up,” said the Rev. Ken Daniell, pastor of Community United Methodist Church. “But the heart of Advent is that God enters right into the middle of our real lives, not because we are perfect, but because we are loved. Advent reminds us that nothing in us is too small, too late or too unlikely for God to use.”

Each week’s message will reflect on a different theme from “The Unlikely Advent,” connecting ancient stories to modern lives and offering encouragement for all who are searching for hope in a challenging world.

The church also invites the community to a beautiful and inspiring Christmas Eve Candlelight Service on Dec. 24 at 6 p.m., featuring organ, choir, handbells, candles and traditional Christmas carols. It will be a classic celebration for all ages.

The Community United Methodist Church is located at 434 Lewis St. All are welcome, no matter your background, questions or faith experience.
