The Pagosa Springs Instrumental Music Society (PSIMS) Community Band is happy to entertain you with our annual spring concert.
Join us in the Pagosa Springs High School auditorium on Saturday, May 16, at 7 p.m. for a celebration of American, and especially Colorado, composers in honor of our long history as a country and a state.
Our program was selected by our indomitable conductors, Leo Baughman and Malinda Burnett. Though they have been putting on musicals and concerts with the high school and middle school for the last two months, they are up for one more with us.
Pagosa Springs is blessed with musical talent. Be sure to come and appreciate us.
Our Colorado composers are Kirk Vogel and Lorrie Baum.
Vogel taught band, choir and jazz band in Palisade, Bayfield and now in Greeley, Colo. He was inducted into the Colorado Music Educators Hall of Fame in 2020. We are performing his compositions “In My Garden” and “Sonoran Sunrise.”
Baum is a trombonist who received her music training and degrees from University of Colorado — Boulder and Northern Colorado University. She has taught band and orchestra in Denver Public Schools for more than 30 years, composing beautiful music for us along the way. We will play her “La Mariposa” dance tune.
We selected W. Francis McBeth, hailing from Ropesville, Texas, to celebrate our neighbors to the southeast.
He earned his music education degree from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, and then went on to conduct for the Arkansas State Band (where future President Bill Clinton played alto sax) and Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. He passed away in 2012 at the age of 78. We will perform his piece “Air and Dance.” I must say, as a newer clarinet player, this one is a workout. Perhaps we should clear the decks for a dance floor.
Our program is rounded out with compositions from Aron Copeland, Percy Aldridge Granger, Jerry Brubaker and Samuel R. Hazo, all from back east, but they are darn good.
PSIMS is a 501(c)(3) organization with the mission to bring music into the lives of the people of Pagosa Springs.
Our motto is “Music for Life.” Our members are your neighbors who still love to play music. Maybe you hear them practicing on the wind? We welcome high school and brave middle school band students to join us. You can meet them at the concert.
Music enriches the lives of the audience as well as the performers. We support music education in the community by welcoming all brave souls who have an instrument they “used” to play or the desire to pick up a new one.
If you don’t have an instrument, contact us at pagoasaspringsIMS@gmail.com and we may be able to hook you up with one to get started with.
Our performances are always free, and we love to provide them for you. We gratefully accept donations at our concerts, through Colorado Gives Day (look up PSIMS) and through annual sponsorships.
Donations go toward operating expenses, music purchases, scholarships for our high school graduates continuing in music and strengthening music education in Pagosa Springs. This year we are awarding two $1,000 scholarships to local students and we supported the high school music department with a $1,000 grant for instrument maintenance and support.
