The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Motor Vehicle Investigation Unit (MVIU) is alerting the public to a rise in the use of counterfeit identification.
Use of “gray market” papers to title or register a vehicle often results in felony forgery charges, permanent criminal records and potential impoundment of the vehicle.
MVIU investigators, who are specially trained in forensic document authentication, have seen an increase in fraudulent Colorado IDs, driver’s licenses and proof-of-address documents.
“The use of counterfeit documents is a serious crime with life-altering consequences,” MVIU Investigations Chief Dana Chavez said. “What may seem like a shortcut to bypass a requirement can quickly escalate into a felony conviction.”
Using forged documents creates a domino effect of legal and financial ruin. Beyond criminal prosecution, owners of vehicles with fraudulent paperwork could face:
• Loss of resale value: Legally selling or trading the vehicle becomes nearly impossible.
• Insurance claim denials: Insurance companies frequently refuse to pay out claims following an accident if the vehicle’s documentation is found to be fraudulent.
• Potential vehicle impoundment: Law enforcement may impound vehicles connected to document fraud.
To help residents avoid unnecessary risks, the Colorado DMV provides safe, legal and streamlined pathways to acquire the identification required for vehicle registration.
These accessible systems ensure that obtaining legitimate identification and vehicle titles is secure and straightforward for all Coloradans.
