“These scholarships are important for us, our partners and for the next generation of conservationists,” said Caleb Stotts, Chama Peak Land Alliance (CPLA) executive director. “These essays from our graduating seniors are always a breath of fresh air and one of the most enjoyable parts of our community work.”
CPLA is a diverse group of conservation-minded landowners committed to embracing and practicing responsible land, water and wildlife stewardship in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico.
CPLA is pleased to announce its selection of three graduating Pagosa Springs High School students to receive the 2026 CPLA Conservation Scholarship.
CPLA offers scholarship opportunities to graduating high school seniors at Escalante and Pagosa Springs high schools to support advanced studies at any university or technical college.
Student applicants were asked to write an essay about their background and career plans, along with their thoughts on conservation or biodiversity.
Included below are short excerpts from the recipient’s essays:
“Surrounded by mountains, rivers, forests, and wildlife, I grew up understanding that the land itself is part of our community. The San Juan Mountains, the forests, and the water that flows through our valley are not only beautiful, but also something we share the responsibility to protect.” — Kaila Limebrook.
“I want to work with children and families who may be walking through the same challenges mine once did. I understand the emotions, the exhaustion, the hope, and the strength it takes. Helping children, especially those with special needs has never felt like just a career path to me. It feels like a calling.” — Katelynn Mills.
“Because of this, conservation has become more important than ever. Protecting our natural resources is not just about preserving the environment, but about preventing further damage and ensuring a safer future for everyone. In my own life, I have seen how conservation matters both personally and within my community.” — Leah Blackman.
CPLA and our scholarship partners wish the recipients and the graduating class of 2026 the best of luck.
