Build Pagosa and the career and technical education (CTE) program at Pagosa Springs High School are proud to announce the appointment of Shandon Carter as the new building trades teacher, stepping into the role previously held by Tor Hessman.
With a strong background in construction and hands-on industry experience, Carter brings valuable expertise and enthusiasm to the classroom.
Carter is also no stranger to the school community. For the past four and a half years, he worked in the school’s maintenance department, where he developed a strong connection with students.
“I enjoyed working with the students so much that when the opportunity came up, it was an easy yes,” Carter said.
The classroom is equipped with an impressive array of tools — both large and small — that empower students to learn the safest and most efficient techniques. It’s a hands-on learning space where curiosity meets craftsmanship, and students are clearly thriving.
This semester, Carter is teaching Building Trades 1 and 2 as well as Woodworking 1, with each class limited to 12 students to ensure hands-on learning. Each class currently includes two female students — a promising sign of growing diversity in the skilled trades.
The first assignment for students was learning how to properly use a hammer and drive 16 penny nails.
Next semester, the course offerings will expand to include AutoCAD Computer Systems, Woodworking 1 and Woodworking 2.
Carter is especially enthusiastic about the upcoming regional workforce center, which will be built adjacent to the high school.
The new facility will provide upgraded space, modern tools and increased capacity, allowing more students to participate in CTE programs. Importantly, the center will also be open to the community after school hours, offering opportunities for adult education and community engagement.
Students are already seeing the benefits, gaining more than just technical skills-they’re building confidence, career readiness, and a strong sense of purpose.
When asked why they chose the class:
• Eric, one of his current Building Trades students, said the class has inspired him to pursue a career in construction. He now has an internship with a local business and said, “There’s not a day I don’t want to go to class.”
• Haden shared it’s an “easy way to make extra money,” highlighting the practical value of the skills learned.
• Jacen said, “My dad does it and I help him,” showing how the class connects to real-life experience and family traditions.
• Edith appreciated the collaborative environment, noting how “they cooperate with ways to fix mistakes,” which fosters teamwork and problem-solving.
• Another student, Hannah, who previously excelled in auto mechanics, is now thriving in building trades as well. She shares that what she loves most is the collaborative environment: “Students are here to help each other, share tools and sometimes even combine work across all the CTE classes.”
Their journeys reflect the program’s mission to foster hands-on learning, teamwork and cross-disciplinary growth.
CTE continues to open doors for students, preparing students not just for careers, but for real-world problem solving and skills, providing motivation and pathways to success.
With Carter’s leadership and a new facility on the horizon, the future of skilled trades education in Pagosa Springs looks brighter than ever.
