As the winter solstice arrives and the world leans into its longest night, the community is invited to a meaningful Blue Christmas service on Thursday, Dec. 21, at 6 p.m. at Community United Methodist Church, 434 Lewis St.
Offered in collaboration with St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, this gentle, reflective gathering honors the beginning of yule, the turning point of the year when the light slowly begins to return.
For centuries, people across cultures have recognized the solstice as a moment of quiet hope and the assurance that even in the deepest darkness, light is on its way. In the Christian tradition, this natural rhythm mirrors the spiritual promise celebrated at Christmas: the coming of Christ, the Light of the World, entering human darkness with love and hope. The return of the sun and the arrival of the Son both speak to God’s presence with us in every season of life, especially the difficult ones.
The Blue Christmas service offers space for those who find this time of year heavy, whether because of grief, illness, stress or simply the weight of a challenging year. While the wider world may be bright with celebration, many people need a quieter place to sit with their emotions, seek comfort and remember that hope still exists.
The service will include soft music, readings, prayers and moments of silence for personal reflection.
All are welcome to this service of compassion and healing, where the community can gather honestly, without expectation, and look toward the returning light, both in nature and in faith.
