Get ready to dive underwater for a high-energy theatrical experience as Archuleta School District presents its dynamic summer junior musical, “The SpongeBob Musical: Youth Edition.” Running from Aug. 13 through Aug. 15 in the Pagosa Springs High School auditorium, this bright and upbeat production is set to save the world.

The fifth- through ninth-grade cast and crew includes 40 community students plus three high school interns led by directors Katrina Thomas and Malinda Burnett. The experienced production team is rounded out with Heather Rose on sets, costumes, and stage managing; Leo Baughman as tech director; and Anika Borders as choreographer.

Based on the beloved animated series created by Stephen Hillenburg, the story brings the vibrant undersea community of Bikini Bottom to life on stage. When a nearby volcano threatens to erupt and destroy their home, SpongeBob and his loyal friends must team up to face the crisis head-on.

Through determination and teamwork, an unexpected hero proves that optimism, friendship and community cooperation can truly save the day.

In addition to its heartwarming, relevant message, “The SpongeBob Musical” features an eclectic soundtrack written by an extraordinary lineup of legendary musical artists. Audiences will enjoy original songs by Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, Lady A, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants, T.I. along with songs by David Bowie, Tom Kenny, and Andy Paley.

“To all of you skeptics out there, I hear you,” noted Thomas. “The first time I went to see this musical, it was with great reluctance. Yet from start to finish, I couldn’t keep smiling. I was blown away by this delightful and surprisingly poignant show. I immediately put it high on the list to bring it to Pagosa with our amazing middle school crew. This is the perfect year for it. The cast is phenomenal, the music and choreography is fabulous, and the story endearing. You won’t want to miss it.”

“The SpongeBob Musical: Youth Edition” will show in the Pagosa Springs High School auditorium Thursday, Aug. 13, at 7 p.m.; Friday, Aug. 14, at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.; and Saturday, Aug. 15, at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students, and can be purchased at the door or online at our.show/PSMS.
