Makayla Voorhis Cardona, a Pagosa native and a graduate of Pagosa Springs High School, is a young wife and mother to two small girls. She suffers from CRPS, a rare, catastrophic and debilitating disease. Her entire body is consumed with burning, excruciating pain.
CRPS, also know as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), is a chronic pain condition in which high levels of nerve impulses are sent to an affected site. It rates higher on the McGill pain scale than cancer, unmediated childbirth and amputation. Makayla has exhausted every option her doctors are able to give her to relieve her symptoms, as well as several natural options. The next step is a five-day, inpatient Ketamine treatment that comes with a hefty price tag, and is not covered by insurance.
A benefit enchilada dinner and dance will be held for Makayla on Friday, Nov. 15, from 5:30-10 p.m. at Pagosa Springs High School.
Cost for adults is $10, students (6-12) are $7 and children 5 and under are admitted free. A raffle will be held, featuring an Orlando vacation package. There will be a silent auction and door prizes.
Tickets can be purchased at the Pagosa Springs Middle School office, at the high school cafeteria, at Fire Station 1 and at the door.
