Astrotourism photo contest winners announced

Pictures speak louder than words, they say. Since more travelers are seeking out the feeling of awe experienced while viewing the night sky, we asked for photos in and around Pagosa Springs that we could use to advertise our wonderful dark sky.

Colorado is one of the leading dark sky destinations in the United States, and we want to entice visitors to come enjoy stargazing in our town.

Of all of the entries, we felt the first place image captures the local beauty of the San Juan National Forest at night. The photo entitled “Tree Top Points the Way” was taken by Patricia Wise using her Samsung Galaxy mobile device.

Notably, the second and third place winners both capture the rare and stunning northern lights as seen from our area. They are “Wolf Creek Aurora” by Barbara Jetley and “Aurora Borealis, Village Lake” by John Farley.

We had fun with the contest and want to thank all participants.

The awards were presented at the Nov. 12 Pagosa Springs Photography Club meeting.
