Archuleta County Public Health Department to host health insurance literacy event

In 2004, Ken Jennings won an impressive $2.52 million on “Jeopardy!” during his remarkable 74-game winning streak. He later became a host of the wildly popular game show.

While that type of prize (and notoriety) will not be given at the Archuleta County Public Health Departments’ (ACPHD’s) Health Insurance Literacy (HIL) event on June 25, the knowledge gained will be just as valuable.

Learn about health insurance in an engaging event hosted by ACPHD Health Navigator Madeline Sutton at the Ruby Sisson Library on June 25 from 5 to 6 p.m.

Sutton will demystify health insurance terms, aiding residents in understanding open enrollment and securing affordable coverage. This interactive session will clarify terms like PCP, HMO, PPO, special enrollment period, out of pocket and various co-pay levels.

Suttons’ HIL “Jeopardy!” event is free and open to the public. Preregistration is not required.

While prizes that could buy a house and perhaps a car or two will not be obtainable during this class, Sutton promises residents will walk away with a better understanding of how Connect for Health and open enrollment periods work.

In addition, she hopes to better enable individuals to properly pick the best plan for themselves and/or their families, saving the most money possible when it comes to health insurance.

“I am excited for people to learn about health insurance and open enrollment in a way that’s fun,” Sutton said. “I think it will be well worth their time to get informed and be knowledgeable about things in the health insurance world”
