About 80 Pagosans crowded into the Liberty Theatre the afternoon of Jan. 19 to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
They watched a special matinee of the film “Selma” sponsored by the Archuleta County Democratic Party on the national holiday honoring the civil rights icon.
The film, a 2015 Best Picture nominee, recounts the fight for voting rights in Alabama in 1965. The campaign there culminated in a march from Selma to Montgomery and prompted President Lyndon Johnson to push, and eventually sign, the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
“Although that was more than 60 years ago, the message of those events has never been more relevant,” said Shawna Seed, chair of the Archuleta County Democrats. “Nonviolent resistance to injustice is powerful.”
The Archuleta Democrats handed out several door prizes at the event, including gift cards to local businesses and a copy of the book “King: A Life,” which won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for biography. The book was signed by the author, Jonathan Eig.
