Pagosa Springs is spicing things up once more as the Mountain Chile Cha Cha returns for its 19th year — and it’s bigger, bolder and tastier than ever.
This year, for the first time, the celebration will take place at Yamaguchi Park, offering stunning mountain views, more space, better parking, and ample room to dance, eat and celebrate Hispanic cultural heritage.
Pagosa Springs may not grow large quantities of green chiles, but we consume them in every form imaginable — served straight up or atop burgers, fries and almost everything else.
The Patty Aragon Green Chile Classic honors this tradition while celebrating the late Patty Aragon, a beloved local cook whose homemade chile was a community favorite.
“My mother made the best green chile, hands down,” said event organizer Jacque Aragon. “I’m proud to carry on her tradition and love seeing other people get excited about making and eating green chile.”
The 17th Annual Patty Aragon Green Chile Classic is the heart of the event, where nearly 50 cooks — both homegrown talent and seasoned professionals — bring their very best recipes to the table. From traditional chile verde to creative twists, the competition is fiercely delicious. Winners take home cash prizes, trophies and the bragging rights that come with them. And for the public? Tasting trays are just $15 — come hungry and ready to cast your vote for People’s Choice.
Want to compete? It’s easier than you think.
Entrants don’t need to stay with their chile — we provide volunteers to serve, and judging is blind for chile with meat and meatless chile.
Every entrant is eligible for the People’s Choice, where tasters vote for their favorite chile. Every cook receives complimentary admission to the event, a thank-you gift, and the opportunity to win cash and prizes. Whether you’re a home cook or a pro, this is your moment to shine. Also new this year: the salsa competition, featuring flavorful entries from local restaurants. Their fresh chips and salsa will be available for purchase throughout the day, while a panel of private judges decides who takes home the crowns.
And of course, the fan-favorite margarita tasting is returning, where local restaurants compete for the best margaritas. Purchase margarita tickets, sample a variety of creations, and vote for your favorite.
Please note: general admission is $10; tastings and margaritas are an additional fee.
The Mountain Chile Cha Cha is more than just a party; it’s a celebration of food, music and community.
Proceeds support the Patty Aragon Memorial Fund, providing scholarships and opportunities for local youth.
Mark your calendars for Saturday, Sept. 27, and join us at Yamaguchi Park for this one-of-a-kind Pagosa Springs tradition. Whether you’re competing, tasting, dancing or just soaking in the atmosphere, you won’t want to miss it.
