Annual Mountain Chile Cha Cha, Patty Aragon Green Chile Classic set for Sept. 27

Posted

Pagosa Springs’ favorite fall fiesta, the Mountain Chile Cha Cha, is back for its 19th year on Saturday, Sept. 27 — rain or shine — in its new location, Yamaguchi Park in downtown Pagosa Springs.

Admission is just $10 (kids 12 and under free). There’s something for everyone: enjoy a green chile cook-off and tasting, a lively Mexican beer garden, a margarita contest and tasting, an all-day kids’ corner, delicious food vendors, and freshly roasted green chiles available for sale by the bag or bushel. Please note: chile tasting trays and margarita tokens are sold separately.

The highlight of the day is the 17th Annual Patty Aragon Green Chile Classic, where nearly 50 cooks — homegrown talent and pros alike — compete for cash, trophies and bragging rights.

Chile tasting will begin at 12:30 p.m., with judging in meat and veggie categories and a People’s Choice award voted on by tasters. Tasting trays are just $15, but limited, so plan to get yours early.

And then there’s the music. Back by super popular demand, we’re thrilled to welcome Sangre Joven and Str8 Shot to the Cha Cha stage once again.

Starting at 12:30 p.m., these two powerhouse New Mexico bands will take the stage at the park, bringing a mix of rancheras, cumbias, corridos, polkas, valses, and high-energy variety hits that will keep the crowd dancing until 5:30 p.m.

About the bands

Sangre Joven is a multi-award-winning band from Las Vegas, N.M., performing in el estillo del norte de Nuevo México, carrying forward a heritage of rancheras and traditional northern New Mexico music.

Str8 Shot is a New Mexico music/variety band known for its unique sound and ability to get any crowd moving, with favorites from classic covers to original hits like their breakout CD, “El Primero.”

So, put on your dancing shoes, bring your appetite, and join us for an unforgettable day of food, culture and community.
