Agencies respond to multiple fires Tuesday

A trio of fires along Deep Canyon Road near Chimney Rock were tended to by area fire personnel Tuesday, April 28, with the causes of the fires under investigation.

According to the Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO), area agencies responded to three separate fires along Forest Service Road 842/Southern Ute Road 152 (Deep Canyon Road) at approximately 1 p.m. on April 28.

Those resources, according to the agency, included the U.S. Forest Service, ACSO, Archuleta County Road and Bridge, Pagosa Fire Protection District, U.S. Wildland Fire Service, Southern Ute Tribal rangers, and Southern Ute Police Department.

Shortly after 5 p.m. on April 28, the San Juan National Forest reported the three fires burning on San Juan National Forest and Southern Ute jurisdictions were nearing containment “thanks to a quick response from multiple agencies.”

The agency further relayed, “All three fires, burning south of Chimney Rock on Deep Canyon Road (Forest Road 842) are under investigation to discover their cause.”

The ACSO reported later in the evening all of the fires had been contained.

The sizes of the fires, according to the Forest Service, were:

• Deep 1 Fire, on Southern Ute lands: 2 acres.

• Deep 2 Fire, on Southern Ute lands: 3 acres.

• Deep 3 Fire, on San Juan National Forest lands: 2 acres. 

According to the Forest Service, fire danger in the San Juan National Forest was moderate as of Wednesday afternoon.
