One show is set aboard the Orca, where the mechanical shark keeps breaking down. The other begins when Wednesday Addams asks her father to keep a secret from her mother. Thingamajig Theatre Company has both stories onstage at the Pagosa Springs Center for the Arts: the ongoing “The Shark Is Broken” and the newly opened teen production “The Addams Family Young@Part.”
During the filming of “Jaws,” repeated problems with the mechanical shark left stars Robert Shaw, Roy Scheider and Richard Dreyfuss waiting together aboard the Orca. “The Shark Is Broken,” written by Ian Shaw and Joseph Nixon, imagines what those hours might have sounded like: arguments about fame, money, politics and who matters most. Tim Moore, Scott Morehead and Cameron Vargas play the three actors. The production opened Oct. 9 and runs through Nov. 15.
Audiences have praised the acting and the production details.
One viewer summed up the appeal as “Fantastic dialogue, acting, set design and story.” Another said the actors were “the spitting image of the original movie cast.” A particularly apt endorsement described “three very smart performers in a very smart script!” One audience member’s recommendation was brief: “Do not miss this show.”
After weeks of rehearsal, Thingamajig’s teen company opened “The Addams Family Young@Part” on Sunday, Oct. 18.
Wednesday has fallen in love with a young man from an ordinary family and asks her father, Gomez, to keep the news from Morticia. When the young man and his parents arrive at the Addams home, the two families attempt to get through dinner together.
Upcoming performances are “The Addams Family Young@Part” on Thursday, Oct. 22 and Sunday, Oct. 25; “The Shark Is Broken” on Wednesday, Oct. 28; and “The Addams Family Young@Part” Thursday, Oct. 29 through Saturday, Oct. 31.
Both productions are at the Pagosa Springs Center for the Arts, 2313 Eagle Drive. For performance times and tickets, visit pagosacenter.org or call (970) 731-SHOW (7469).
