Group will discuss issues related to death on May 7

Posted

Interested people will be meeting for a third time on Tuesday, May 7, at 1:30 p.m. in the Ruby Sisson Library meeting room.

Hood Mortuary is the only one in Pagosa and maybe even in Durango, so we will not be giving them an advantage over anyone else since they are the only “show in town.” Ryan Phelps and his wife are the owners and they greatly value being able to meet with people when they are not devastated with the loss of a loved one. Phelps will go over all the questions and choices that need to be discussed at the time of death. He has had much experience in talking to others about this difficult and highly emotional topic.

I want everyone to be able to mark your calendar for Tuesday, May 7, at 1:30 p.m. at the Ruby Sisson Library for some very important information. He will also answer all our questions, so ask them.

Other topics to be discussed:

• Green burials.

• At our first meeting a man who recently lost his wife shared the fulfilling experience of having her body picked up at the hospital, transported and used for medical science, then having her ashes returned in an urn with absolutely no cost to the family. He will bring specific information on May 7 so that more people will be able to use such a program.

• We are hoping to have dates for medical practitioners to speak to our group on the Colorado End-Of-Life Options Act which passed in 2016.

• Another major topic of concern is the paperwork that needs to be filled out related to end-of-life, such as do not resuscitate, do not transport and advance directives. We are working on finding a future speaker on “the paperwork of dying.”

• Additional new topics can be presented. If you have information that may be of value to our group, please come to our next meeting. There is so much potential in this gathering.

Please note that we are not a club or formal group at this time, but independent people who plan on meeting, finding speakers and asking questions until all our questions have been answered. If this interests you, feel welcome to join us.

We are not encouraging sales representatives of any kind to attend. Please be respectful of this topic regardless how valuable you feel your product might be or we may have to formally handle this situation.
